Japan’s Maritime Self-Defense Force will begin receiving MQ-35 V-BAT drones, manufactured by the American company Shield AI, early this year, the publication Axios reported.
According to Brandon Tseng, co-founder of Shield AI, Japan acquired several drones as part of a record-breaking strategic program. Tseng highlighted that the agreement aligns with the company’s “Indo-Pacific support campaign,” in response to China’s growing ambitions in the region.
The MQ-35 V-BAT drones will allow the Japanese Navy to enhance its maritime reconnaissance capabilities and can be deployed from various types of vessels.
Global Expansion of the MQ-35 V-BAT
Shield AI’s MQ-35 drones are already in operation with the U.S. Marine Corps, Navy, and Coast Guard. Additionally, the international market is increasingly interested in the technology.
For instance, the Indian Armed Forces have already expressed interest in the drones. In November 2024, it was announced that the Indian JSW Group had formed a joint venture with Shield AI to produce drones locally. The JSW Group will invest around $90 million over the next two years, allocating funds for building a factory, acquiring intellectual property, and training employees.
The new industrial plant will not only serve the needs of the Indian Armed Forces but will also become a global manufacturing hub for Shield AI.
Shield AI Expansion
Recently, on January 19, Shield AI inaugurated an office in Kyiv, reinforcing support for Ukraine’s MQ-35A drone fleet. Additionally, the company announced the start of training Ukrainian specialists to operate the V-BAT drones.
With growing global demand, Shield AI is consolidating its position as a leader in reconnaissance drone technology and advanced military systems.
